The short answer: compared to London, Amsterdam, or Paris, yes, significantly. Compared to Southeast Asia, not so much. Portugal hits a sweet spot for people from higher-cost Western countries who want to reduce their expenses without giving up quality of life.
That said, costs have gone up quite a bit in Lisbon and Porto since 2020. If you're watching your budget closely, the real deals are in medium-sized cities like Braga, Coimbra, Setúbal, or towns in the interior.
Rent is by far the biggest variable in your Portuguese budget.

Portugal offers great value for money, especially if you're earning in a stronger currency (USD, GBP, CHF). The key is matching your expectations to the city: Lisbon and Porto have become genuinely pricey by European standards, but the rest of the country is still very affordable.
